As a general conclusion of this analysis, it seems likely that, for books whose sales ranks are about 10,000 or greater, Amazon uses a mathematical algorithm to determine the sales rank of each book that does not depend on what is happening to the sales rank of any other book in that range.

The most detailed analysis of Amazon's sales rank that I've ever come across was recently published on Patricia Walsh's site. The article walks through a statistical analysis of her book's sales history conducted over a period of months.
